I am convinced if we would keep all of God’s commands to walk in them, walk in his statutes, and execute his judgments, he will perform his word with us.
As I was reading through the book of 1 King back in 2015 so many things captured my attention. Enough for me to start wondering and ask questions. In 1 King chapter 6, it described how King Solomon built the temple with figures of cherubim throughout the temple. I wondered, why is that? Why would that be so significant? How was it relevant when speaking of the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord and worship? In heaven, cherubim are in the presence of God and they protect the glory of God. The glory of God is within us, his children. So, what protects it? Holiness. Holiness protects the glory of God in us, along with the angels he places around us.
In Genesis chapter 3 verse 24, cherubim are introduced as guardians of paradise. They were standing guard. After Adam and Eve sinned God placed them at the entrance of the garden of Eden to keep the way of the tree of life and keep Adam and Eve out. Throughout the book of Psalms and Ezekiel, they are described as bearers of God’s throne and dwelling place. “He came down riding a Cherub”, “the wings of the wind” (Psalms 18:9-10; 104:3-4). “He dwellest between them” (Psalms 80:1), “and sitteth between them” (Psalms 99:1). 1 Samuel chapter 4 verse 4 says the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord of host dwelleth between cherubim. The prophet Ezekiel saw something like a throne above their heads (Ezekiel 2:22; 10:1). He heard the noise of their wings, the noise of great waters, as the voice of the Almighty, a voice of speech, noise of a host (Ezekiel 1:24). They are at the end of God’s mercy seat, facing towards it. Their wings stretch and cover it (Exodus 25:18-20; 37:7-9).
In Exodus chapter 25 verse 22 God told Moses, “and there I will meet with thee, and I will commune with thee from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubim which are upon the ark of the testimony, of all things which I will give thee in commandment unto the children of Israel”. Numbers chapter 7 verse 89 says, “and when Moses was gone into the tabernacle of the congregation to speak with him, then he heard the voice of one speaking unto him from off the mercy seat that was upon the ark of testimony, from between the two cherubim: and he spake unto him”. Hebrews chapter 9 verse 5 speaks of the cherubim of glory shadowing the mercy seat.
Guess who used to be among the cherubim? Lucifer. According to Ezekiel chapter 28 verses 12 to 15, Lucifer was a cherub. He was cast out of glory. The cherubim are guardians of the Holy of holies. God is enthroned above them. They carry out God’s purpose. They are upon the mercy seat and involved in the worship of the Lord. They magnify the holiness and power of God. 1 Corinthians chapter 3 verse 16 tells us, “know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in us”. Paul tells Timothy in 2 Timothy chapter 1 verse 9 “that good thing which was committed unto thee keep by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in us”. Colossians chapter 1 verse 27 says, “to whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory”. We can not habitually live in sin and experience the presence and glory of God. In 2 Corinthians chapter 6 verse 16, Paul wrote “and what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? For ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people”. Jesus is not your God if his Spirit is not dwelling within you.
The glory of God is in those that are filled with the Holy Ghost. We have a similar purpose and function as the cherubim. The presence of God dwells in his children and he is with us wherever we go. It is our duty to live holy so that the glory of God in us can be seen and protect us. The Spirit of God in us help us carry out his will to live holy and worship him. True worship ushers in the presence of God and it allows his glory to shine forth. Holiness keeps us guarded against sin and corruption. “Holy” is translated from the Hebrew term “quodesh”. Which means “set apart for God”. In translation, it means to be holy, consecrated, and sanctified. In a world with its heart set on rebelling against God, being set apart for God is not impossible with the power of the Holy Ghost.
God is holy. He calls us to be holy for him. Holiness protects the gift of God in us. A lifestyle of holiness will help keep sin out. The Holy Spirit will guide us, and holiness will uphold us, keeping us accountable. There is no true worship without holiness. We cannot mingle in everything then convince ourselves our worship is acceptable to Christ. The cherubim are in direct contact with the presence of God. By the gift and power of the Holy Ghost, so are we when we worship with clean hands and a pure heart. We can then be in the Holy of Hollies to worship God. It is crucial for us to repent daily and not live as though we do not fall short of God’s glory every day he wakes us up. Sin will keep us from the mercy seat. We cannot worship God with unrepentant hearts. Lucifer is the fallen cherub that wants to destroy our worship. He was once among the cherubim in the presence of God. He lost that privilege and honor. He is after our holiness and worship. God uses us as vessels to carry out his purpose. When we live holy and we worship we invite him to reign and rule among us. His glory is exalted. True worship begins with holiness in spirit and in truth (John 4:24). The Holy Spirit is in us to make us holy like God. Holiness is powerful, and we will not see the Lord without it.
