Knots

During my training week I was okay at knots.   I picked them up quite easily and could remember what was what, or so I thought.  Unfortunately, not knotting on a regular basis results in not a lot of knots and instead you end up feeling like getting knotted.

However, three were revised and practised and hopefully back in the grey matter for good.

So above picture on the left shows Square Lashin and on the right a Clove Hitch. The clove hitch is used to start off the lashing and also to finish it.  The Square Lashing allows for two pieces of wood to be tied together.  I have used this to make picture frames at school for natural art, but it is also used as the basis for equipment making.  If you are super clever, you can sheer lash a series of ‘legs’ together and make an aerial bridge, but I may leave that to Mr Grylls and his team.

In addition, a reef knot was practised (above).  Apparently this is an ancient binding knot used to secure a rope or line around an object, often used by sailors for furling sails and also tying bandages.

The knots were mainly achieved with the help of a handy App called ‘Knots 3D’.  Despite being in a woods partly to escape reality and all things tech, in this instance, the mobile phone and its App was invaluable.

Anyway, knots are now on my list of New Years resolutions of things to do for at least  5 minutes a day.

On another knot (hahahahahahahaa) , bacon bagels and King Alfred’s cakes have been ticked off the Forest School bucket list!

Above left does not work, above right does.
