Crowther and Westerman
review 1: A well plotted mystery that encompasses the Opera and the Navy. Once again Crowther and Westerman are obliged to investigate a murder- this time in 18th century London. Robertson's depictions of the metropolis- its sights, its smells, its sounds and most importantly its people immerse one firmly in 1781. The complex relationship between Crowther and Westerman, and their individual characters and conflicts, deepen in this novel and leave one hankering to know more about them. I am looking forward to the next in this series.
review 2: I must admit, I have changed my mind about this series - I really like it! I have now read the second and third of the series and they just keep getting better and better. Lots of characters to keep up with and I wish the author
... more would decide if she is going to call a character by their last name or their first name as it is confusing to keep switching, but that is such a minor complaint in a wonderfully written murder mystery series! Robertson combines complex plot, colorful characters, and a great sense of the era of which she writes in this follow up to the first book, Instruments of Darkess. In Anatomy of Murder, Harriet (Mrs. Westerman) and Crowther have removed themselves to London while Captain Westerman recovers from a head injury suffered on board his ship. While in London, their investigative reputations preceded them and they are asked to help solve the mystery of a body found in the Thames. Of course, one thing (murder) leads to another (murder) and they are swept into a conspiracy connecting the Opera House, French Spies, and Captain Westerman himself. Each book is more exciting and reveals a bit more about our two main characters and their symbiotic friendship. A great read for those who love a complicated mystery and historical fiction, and just plain old good writing! less
