Oryx & Crake- Margaret Atwood

There is nothing better than getting lost in a good book, settling down somewhere and whiling a few hours away reading is something that I love doing. I will give any genre a go and will try any book.

I read The Handmaid’s Tale by Atwood a while ago and have been enjoying the tv adaption, but until very recently, I hadn’t read another book by Atwood. What a mistake! If you like future based novels that grip you and get your brain working then Atwood is the author for you. Her writing is brilliant, she weaves in descriptions and words that you really grow to love whoever is narrating the story. What makes her writing even more gripping is the thought that what she is writing about isn’t too far around the corner. The technology she describes and the idealism is so similar it does make you shudder.

So, I decided I would try another Atwood novel and following some investigating decided that Oryx & Crake would be my choice. This is because it is set in a dystopian future like The Handmaid’s Tale.

From the very start I really loved the character of the Snowman, he brought so many questions to my mind. What happened to the world? Who are the Children of Crake? Who are Oryx and Crake?! Atwood keeps you guessing and moving back and forth in the narrative, you are constantly reading the memories of the Snowman and the present that he is living in. The ending has left me wanting to read the remaining two books in the MaddAddam trilogy as it has left so many questions unanswered as well as opening up more options that I just can’t wait to explore! So much so, that as soon as I had finished the last page in Oryx & Crake I was on Amazon buying the next two!

I would say that this book is a good read and a must for anyone wanting to try something more by Atwood. However, I would say that at times it does not live up to the brilliance of The Handmaid’s Tale, at times it isn’t as subtle in its imagination.

I can’t wait to read the next book and share my thoughts with you. Have you read Oryx and Crake? Share with me what you think.

Until next time, happy reading!
