Rainbow Fish Baby Goodies

A few months ago, I wandered into the quilt store – as one does when one is nearby – and I stumbled across the most adorable fabric. I thought to myself “Gee, that sure reminds me of The Rainbow Fish.” As a kid, I LOVED The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister. That book and my baby doll Johnson were the two staples of my early years.

Low and behold! The fabric was in fact part of a Rainbow Fish line by Studio 37 fabrics. I impulse bought a 1/4 yard of each of the fabrics they had in stock and a fat quarter of one they no longer had a bolt of. I didn’t have a project in mind, but figured I’d come up with something.

That brings us to today. A few months ago – right around the time I bought the fabric – my brother told me his best friends were expecting their first child. Here was a purpose for my purchase! I would make glorious Rainbow Fish things for this little munchkin.

I visited my favorite tutorials to make pacifier clips and bibs and whipped up some burp rags (Disclaimer – I started with these tutorials but I’ve adapted them, as I sew like I cook – follow the directions to the letter the first time, then change things the next time).

Honestly, the most difficult part of this adventure was finding the book to go with the gift. I’ve started doing books instead of cards with baby gifts and naturally I wanted to get The Rainbow Fish to go with the gift. Evidently, the only place you can find it now in person is at Barnes & Noble. After much internet scouring and one lunch break spent hunting the shelves of Half Priced Books, I managed to track the book down at HPB for $4.99. What a steal, considering at B&N it’s $18 in store! So I ended up getting a few books from the author and those are going to accompany the gift.

The basket in all it’s glory – it’s missing the “Sorry I Peed On You” book I use as cards to expecting parents. Advertisements Share this:
