Home on the Range. Here is a movie that I watched maybe twice as a kid and then completely forgot about. Every once in awhile I’m reminded about this film, usually on blogger’s top ten least favorite Disney movies. Recently I was perusing Hulu and Home on the Range was just begging to be re-watched.
Guess what?
It’s actually not that bad.
Voice acting is decent, and I adore the music and animation….the animation!! Character designs are cute, backgrounds are beautiful and the animation is so fluid! I don’t know if I’ve just been missing traditional 2D animation but it was kind of refreshing to see such smooth 2D. And seriously these backgrounds!
Look, I get it. These elements alone don’t make a movie. But you have to appreciate the work that went into this! I’ve always been a little more biased towards traditional animation so, trying not to let that sway my opinion of this film, let’s press on.
The story is….cliche. The plot revolves around three cows trying to catch an outlaw so that they have enough money to save their farm. It’s honestly a forgettable story, like I said I often forget this movie was made. Despite this the whole thing is just an hour and 16 minutes of harmless, stupid fun. As cliche as it is, the story is cohesive and flows well, which is more than I can say about most kids films these days. Characters are complimentary and the villain…..I actually really love the villain in this! They take this huge, masculine, gruff villain and give him this fantastically dainty super power of yodeling! It’s a joy!
Look…is this movie on my top ten list of Disney films? Heaven’s no. But this is a fun movie that honestly is a hidden gem. When it comes to Disney, I think there are a hand full of movies that just get thrown away and don’t deserve it. Brother Bear, The Princess and the Frog…for whatever reason there is just this bundle of Disney children that get forgotten and I would put Home on the Range on that list.
It is not perfect by any means. This movie didn’t change my life or leave a lasting impression. But for a small bit of time it did give me some joy during this crazy life. And sometimes that all we need out of a film.

Please let me know what you think, whether you agree or disagree! I would love to have a conversation about the movies and movie related things I post about on this blog.
