review 1: The reading order that I used:*The Black Flame #1*War on Frogs #1*Revival (War on Frogs #5)*War on Frogs #2*War on Frogs #4*The Black Flame #2-6*War on Frogs #3This volume was published way after The Black Flame but contains flashback stories from that story arc...it was decent.Issue #1, #2, and #4 are 4/5 stars while issues #3 and #5 are 3/5 stars.*I liked Roger's moral qualms and "what was the point of this, exactly?" attitude in regards to Cavendish hall.*The slaughter of the armed forces on the boat was phenomenal.*Johann and frog monster ghosts? Priceless. The revival tent story with Daimio and the wrap up with Liz were pretty solid but were weaker than the rest.
review 2: Kind of a non-essential, interstitial volume of the series, consisting of five short
... morestories that take place several earlier in the timeline of the series than when they came out (I think?), and maybe published in a few different places, like anthologies or on the web. There are some decent character pieces and looks at what life is like for the nameless grunts of the BPRD who have to go into battle against these horrible monsters alongside the more "famous" heroes, which is kind of interesting, if a bit depressing. The best story is probably the one in which a squad of guys gets trapped in what they think is an abandoned frog monster lair and picked off one by one, like a short take on Alien or something, but there's one with Captain Daimio going after a group of monsters that take on human form and pose as faith healers in revival tents that's also kind of striking. And it's always nice to see Roger again, so the story where he goes back to Cavendish Hall, the location of the very first Hellboy story, to find out if there are any frog monsters still surviving, is also all right. Not a completely necessary volume (unless it's trying to sell the idea that the frogs are at least somewhat intelligent, rather than just rampaging monsters who are trying to bring about the apocalypse), but it's still worth reading. less

The frogs are back...in a sense. This collection has some good moments, but never feels cohesive.

Slightly disappointing after what went before, but what wouldn't be? Flashbacks a-go-go.

Pretty heterogenous, but the last two stories are five star

Felt like a weak end to a strong storyline.
