Book: River Monsters: True Stories of the Ones that Didn’t Get Away by Jeremy Wade
Genre: Nonfiction, Biography, Animals, Travel, Nature
For some bizarre reason I don’t like any bodies of water. Not only because I can’t swim but I just feel uneasy not fully knowing what is lurking underneath.
See that dark part? Big Nope Nope to me. I mean I hate those dark and deep bodies of water but the animals doesn’t have anything to do with that fear. That is why when I found this book on a thrift store, I grabbed it then ran straight to the cashier. I am not exaggerating here, a guy is also aiming for it, so I have to go and claim it!Sadly, the jacket of this book was ruined during our house renovation.
This book is a series of investigations into the murky world of the fishermen’s tales. The tales are of river monsters that are frighteningly large or dangerous — or both. Fish that swallow men whole, others that eat them from within, and others that pack a killer punch. And the truth, though elusive and sometimes complex, is often every bit as unbelievable as the myth. (Jeremy Wade)
Basically, these are some of the stories that aired on the show as well. You might be thinking, “I watched the show, I don’t need to read the book if it is the same thing.”
In my humble opinion, I think you should try and read this. It was fascinating to read what was happening behind the camera. The efforts and struggles in order to put out an hour of documentary. I also enjoy the way Wade narrates the story. It almost feels like he is sharing this stories with you while sitting on a bon fire, drinking beer. The funny thing is, I don’t know anything about fishes, and if you are following me on Twitter or Goodreads you might have noticed how slowly I read this book. The reason being I have to occasionally stop reading just to pull out a measuring tape so that I can see how long a fish is.( Yes, I am not good at calculating lengths inside my brain) Aside from that, I have to stop per chapter because I was really curious about what the fish looked like. Google became my best friend while reading this book. If you don’t want to stoop to my level while reading this, don’t worry, there are a couple of photos included inside the book, not all, but still fascinating.
Surprisingly, I learned more things aside from the fish information mentioned in the book. This book will also show you the different sides of human nature. Wade will show you a glimpse of the people he met when he embarked on those adventures. The friendly ones, the odd but still friendly ones, the occasional boastful type and those people that fail to act out their humanity.
Overall this is a pretty nice book and worth the read. As for the show, the moment of writing this I found out that they are already showing the last season in England and Scotland. More info on the photo below.
