The Artifice : The Mythological and Folk Tale Origins of Classic Anime

I have been writing for the website The Artifice, occasionally for 2 years now. They just published my fourth article, The Mythological and Folk Tale Origins of Classic Anime. The article focuses on how Japanese mythology and folklore have been used as inspiration for many anime and manga. I focus on Inuyasha, Naruto, Shinigami and what myths inspired their creators. Some of the other articles that I’ve written are:

Pokémon and the Animals in Captivity Debate

People in the Pokémon world have used Pokémon for various reasons. Most people are Pokémon trainers. Many people find reasons to exploit and abuse Pokémon mainly for profit and power. Pokémon are shown to have feelings, personalities and are capable of understanding human language. Throughout the Pokémon series various conflicts have arisen regarding the treatment of Pokémon. To this end several governing bodies have been established to protect Pokémon and punish their abusers.

The 5 Saddest Moments in One Piece

Nico Robin was born on the island of Ohara, to a family of archaeologist’s. Her mother abandoned her when she was two, leaving her in the care of her abusive aunt. Her devil fruit ability scared the townspeople leaving her isolated. She sought solace with the scholars at the “Tree of Knowledge”, and particularly with Professor Clover. She became a scholar herself at the age of eight. Robin was open about her wish to learn the truth of the “history of the world”. Dr. Clover informed her that she could get banned if she pursued that knowledge. Upset, Robin ran to a nearby beach where she met a giant, Jaguar D. Saul. They developed a friendship.

Mechas: Disassociation from Science Fiction

The four type’s of mecha are sentient, remote-controlled, wearable, and piloted. Sentient mechas are self-aware, capable of thought and emotion, such as in Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet (2013). Remote-controlled mecha is controlled from a distance. Gigantor is a good example of a remote-controlled mecha. Wearable mecha, like the ones found in Bubblegum Crisis (1987), is worn like armor and controlled by the human’s mind or body. Piloted is the last type. The pilots control the mecha internally like a vehicle, the mecha in Armored Trooper VOTOMS (1983) are controlled in this way.
