review 1: A very illuminating portrayal of Russia in the early 19oos. Eye opener for me with Bloody Sunday, which gave me more understanding for the Revolution. Ultimately a sad tale. The view of the life of Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna reinforces how much women have been through. She blossomed despite her limitations of that time, and in some ways, because of them. Her death was a tragic loss to the people of Russia who needed her so.
review 2: A powerfully and masterfully written book. Great, simple but evocative narrative. Wonderful character development. Gripping story and writing style. It's the kind of book that if i had the luxury of a few hours straight of reading time (instead of stolen moments of 5-10mins in between chores and work), i would have finished
... more it in one sitting. His lead characters Grand Duchess Elisabeth and Pavel were so intricately crafted that in the course of reading the book, i felt like they never left me. I could palpably feel their struggles, their pain and joy -- even if Robert Alexander never belabored their sentiments in his writing. I have now become a fan of Robert Alexander. less
