I had decided near the end of the year that I wanted to finish some of the book series that I had started. I am really bad about reading the first book in a series and then putting off the rest of the series for a while. Even when all of the books are published. Even when I have all of the books in a series. It had been a while since I had kept to my plan of finishing the book series that I had so I decided to finish off my next series.
The Evolution of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin is the follow up to The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer. It takes place a few days after the events of the first book. Mara is starting to think she might be a danger to the loved ones around her but she isn’t quite ready to be shipped off to a mental institution. Unfortunately for her, her parents aren’t so sure. They have decided to send her to a new school where she would still get to live at home but also get the treatment they believed she needed. While she is there though Mara begins to unravel more clues that could lead to the answer to her dangerous abilities but as she does this she puts herself in a tricky situation.
This review will be a little tricky to write since it is the sequel of another book. I don’t want to give away too many spoilers from the first book. Especially because mystery and intrigue is what this book is all about. There are so many questions that I wanted answers to and it seemed for every answer I got I was presented with another question that I desperately needed answers to. Sometimes when author choose this method in their books it can’t always be pulled off. I think that this method of writing can sometimes turn away readers. You read to get answers to the questions in the beginning not to end with more questions than you had to start. Michelle Hodkin was excellent at pulling this off though. You could tell she was building up to a grand reveal and she gave you just enough tidbits of information at just the right time.
Once again this book had amazing dialogue. I loved how well it was written. I feel like the characters are heavily developed through the dialogue. I am a huge fan of dialogue. I don’t always like pages of descriptions and thought monologues of the characters. To me that can get really boring. I love reading a great dialogue exchange between two characters. Michelle Hodkin is excellent at making this happen.
Of course I believe this has to do with her having such excellent characters to work with. It had been a while (basically a year exactly) since I had read the first book so I had forgotten how much I enjoyed these characters. And it wasn’t just one or two characters that I liked, it was every single one of them. Even the smallest side characters were written so well. She really has a knack for creating characters.
Overall, this was an excellent sequel and lead up to the final book in the series.
