Jonah 1:13-15, 17
“…the men did their best to row back to land. But they could not, for the sea grew even wilder than before. Then they cried to the Lord, ‘O Lord, please do not let us die for taking this man’s life. Do not hold us accountable for killing an innocent man, for you, O Lord, have done as you pleased.’ Then they took Jonah and threw him overboard, and the raging sea grew calm…But the Lord provided a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was inside the fish for three days and three nights.”

“[Jesus] then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again.”

“Death has been swallowed up in victory. Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?”
Great Saviour, you followed us into the raging wind and waves of sin.
We cannot be saved by failed prophets or determined sailors, but you point the way to the perfect and acceptable sacrifice. Death devoured your Son for three dark nights before he walked resurrection’s shore.
Remind us when we are in the heart of the sea that we will never sink beyond your reach. Throw our deep fears overboard to be swallowed by Christ’s victory.
It is in his name that we cry out to you, the truly innocent man who gave his life to calm the sting of the storm.
