review 1: Is it possible to "out-Parker" the legendary Robert B. Parker? Author Reed Farrel Coleman comes close with this novel, penned under contract with Parker's estate. On the surface, it's a great Jesse Stone mystery story. But there's a deeper aspect to Coleman's work. This is also the story of one man's struggle with alcohol, and with dealing with past failure and guilt. A strong book, with an ending that begs for a sequel.
review 2: Coleman's writing this Jesse Stone mystery in the style of Robert Parker is average in terms of plot and below in terms of characters. The plot has some good twists and turns, but rambles too often into some very predictable ways. Jesse Stone's character is there, but his voice, his demeanor, his commanding presence is not. ... moreog turned into a cat! Denigrating women was not Jesse's style either. Unfortunately, Coleman's ending leads into a sequel , something Parker would never blatantly do. Fortunately, I have the free will not to read it. less
