review 1: Regina Jeffers ci regala, con questo libro, un ottimo giallo ambientato a Pemberley.Oggetti e cibi che spariscono, misteriose morti e un fantasma che si aggira tra le ombre di Pemberley…Una Pemberley a dir poco affollata da alcuni semi-sconosciuti (e non) costretti a chiedere ospitalità a causa di una tormenta di neve che blocca ogni via e riempie la locanda più vicina.Tra gli ospiti troviamo anche Lady Catherine, costretta a chiedere l’aiuto di Darcy per una faccenda “strettamente personale” (forza Anne!!), ma che comunque non le fa dimenticare l’astio per Elizabeth e la rende sempre più odiosa pagina dopo pagina.Insieme a nuovi personaggi, troviamo anche quelli amati in Orgoglio e Pregiudizio, primi fra tutti Darcy e Elizabeth, che se all’inizio ci possono... more sembrare tali a quali a quando li avevamo lasciati, compiono tutti all’interno del romanzo, un’apprezzabile evoluzione.Ho apprezzato molto lo stile della scrittrice, soprattutto nei punti in cui Elizabeth chiama Darcy “My husband”, parole che, data l’epoca di ambientazione del romanzo, sottolineano, a mio parere, quel pizzico di ribellione che contraddistingue il carattere di Elizabeth.Ho trovato il giallo ben strutturato e anche se a volte ho avuto l’impressione di poter intuire il colpevole, la scrittrice è stata molto abile a fuorviarmi e a mantenere l’assoluta segretezza fino al momento più opportuno.Davvero un ottimo romanzo!!
review 2: I wanted to like the idea of a murder mystery at Pemberley. But much like Death Comes to Pemberley, this failed to deliver. There were so many bizarre twists and turns that the plot became confusing, and then the final big reveal and the climax of the story happened over about twenty pages.There were a bunch of little things that bothered me about the writing throughout:- Any pet names are capitalised - my Husband, my Sweetling, my Dear, my Love.- The servants' speech patterns are odd, and make them seem like either stereotypical slaves, or pirates: "I no be knowin' ma'am. Shee just be sending' me to fetch yo'."- The Darcys regularly refer to various servants - even footmen - as Mr. [insert name here]. Which the upper classes would never have done, because it puts the lower classes on an equal social standing. Similarly, the servants would be unlikely to refer to Mr. Darcy by name.Other than that, I mostly found it predictable. I guessed about four chapters into it who the murderer would be, and I was right. I also guessed that there'd be some kind of romantic sub-plot for Georgiana and who the love interest would be. In summary, not *completely* terrible but also not something I would recommend. less
