review 1: So I don’t normally randomly choose a book from my Kindle to read. I spend at least an hour thumbing through the pages, looking back at blurbs, and trying to decide what kind of mood I’m in. So Friday night when I turned on my Kindle I went back 2 pages and saw The Living Dead Boy, I decided this would be the book.I snuggled in, turned out the lights, and started reading. By 3:20 in the morning I had to turn the light back on, quickly check the hallway for zombies, and close my bedroom door as quietly as I could – I even considered locking it, but decided a locked flimsy wood interior door wouldn’t stop them if they wanted in anyways. At that point I was too scared to go to sleep, so I did the only thing I could and kept reading. And at 6 AM before the sun came up ... moreI reached 100% and it was finally okay to leave the bedroom to pee. When the story starts out you’re thrown right into the action, the Zombie Hunters are in Josh’s backyard battling the undead just as he cracks the bat the zombie squeals and cries out in pain. Wait. What? The group are practicing their tactics for when the dead begin to rise. Josh is obsessed with zombies, he knows everything there is to know about them. He takes notes from movies, follows the zombie forums online, and watches the news. But when the riots start happening and people are turning into the living dead he wants his Mom and Dad.When reading this books it’s easy to forget that it was written for MG/YA. Rhiannon did such a superb job in making this book scary without using the excessive gore, language, or sexual content that most horror books or movies contain. None of that cheapens the story though when a group of school children have to endure the real hardships of a zombie apocalypse. Josh and his friends the Zombie Hunters are forced to make hard and fast decisions crucial to their survival, they are faced with having to kill those that they love and they haven’t even reached puberty. This book has to be one of the most underrated books on Amazon with less than 30 reviews! It’s easily one of the best books I’ve read in the last year. Fast paced, great characters, and unlike anything I’ve read before. I recommend this book for anyone who loves a good story, especially a good zombie story.
review 2: I actually finished this book quite awhile ago but, you know how it sometimes.....life gets in the way and I totally forgot to update and review. This is the first book I've read from Rhiannon Frater (I have 2 others, I believe, on my TBR list and can't wait to get to them) and I think it's safe to say that I am officially a big fan!! I really enjoyed her style of writing and the total originality of, The Living Dead Boy. I've read close to 80 zombie books now and it's really refreshing to come across a unique zombie tale from the eyes of a 12 year old boy. If Fraters goal was to get her readers in the mind set of what it would be like to be 12 and experiencing the zpoc, I'd say that her goal was accomplished. There were several parts of this book that I found myself "biting my nails" or "sitting on the edge of my seat" because I was truly remembering what it was like to be 12 again and was imagining how terrified I would have been if I had experienced anything even remotely close to what these poor kids had to endure.I don't like to give away "spoilers" or talk too much about the details of the books I review. I would just like to say that I highly recommend The Living Dead Boy to any zombie fan. Frater did an exceptional job of incorporating all the typical Zpoc stuff that you're used to, but in this case, she used the originality of experiencing it through a child's point of view!Well done Rhiannon Frater!! You definitely have yourself a new fan. I can't wait to check out the other books you've written!! less
