review 1: A shooting happens after the husband of a woman discovers she has a paramour - the victim is her husband and the suspect the apparent lover. In fact he has admitted to it, claiming self defence. This defence is not, at first glance, going to fly as the husband was unarmed and was shot with his own gun , removed from the marital home by the lover shortly beforehand. The defending counsel, Captain Paul Terry, picks up the case as both the suspect and victim are in the US Army. He is helped by the sister of the defendant, who happens to also be a lawyer. The defendant's father is a highly decorated and well respected senior officer, who seems to have demanded standards from his son that aren't being achieved - and who could well do without the scandal that has involve... mored his son. There is some initial conflict between the defence team, who are not helped by the apparent unwillingness of the accused to provide details about what has happened, and to assist with building a defence of post traumatic stress disorder as both he and the victim served together in Iraq. This is quite a good story about how Terry picks away at the prosecution evidence, and finds witnesses who can help the defendant prove his case. But still, there is something that Terry, and the reader, isn't being told. The writing about the court procedure, and the discoveries unearthed by Terry are enough to keep the interest going, and the conclusion works, for me anyway. Like the last book I read by this author it is a satisfying tale, but I could have done without reading about the two lawyers falling into the sack quite as quickly as they did - am I the only one who thinks that less is more sometimes?
review 2: I am finding the more Richard North Patterson I read, the more I like him. While still in the patriotic/anti-terrorist style of writing, he does not come from the ultra-conservative of, say, Brad Thor. He is not afraid to put some of the blame for the troubles int he world at the door of the conservatives. He does not idolize the military and their customs. Everyone has an equal chance at being human - whether for good or not - and takes it. less
