review 1: Interesting story set largely in the Middle East in August and September 2011 with lots of flashbacks to provide context. There are maps as well. A nuclear weapon has been stolen and a video message of Osama Bin Laden has been broadcast announcing that on the anniversary of 9/11, there will be an attack on 'one of your cities'. Brooke Chandler, a tall blond, fluent Arab speaker with a Masters in Middle Eastern study and 10 years experience with the CIA emerges as the one with the idea and skill to find the weapon, determine where it is going and prevent it from being exploded. Along the way, the reader learns a variety of things about the region.A great beach or airplane ride and it made me want to take advantage of the sources described in the afterward to read more o... moren the subject.
review 2: BEWARE OF SPOILERS. I DON'T HIDE OR PROMOTE MY REVIEWS.Richard North Patterson always manages a good romance for his hero, without being mawkish. In this story he saves the reunion of the long-gone-their-separate-ways lovers to the end -- they both blow their covers as spies as they jointly prevent a terrorist nuclear attack on Israel (which the terrorists have cleverly disguised as a nuclear feint against the U.S.)I enjoyed the way the actual events unfold one way, but the "official" version disseminated by the various governments changes the facts to protect, or burnish, their own images. less
