Stepping On Roses
review 1: The cover and description of this manga are quite misleading, it looks cutsie and romantic. There is definitely not any romance in volume one, in fact the content is quite mature and a little dark. A very poor and naive fifteen year old girl decides to sell her body to feed and house the orphan children she has taken into her care and is "bought" by a very wealthy and cold man. This is not something I would have chosen to read, had I known, but I was drawn into the story enough to continue.
review 2: I forget how I even found out about this series, but the idea of a historical shojo caught my eye and I read several volumes. While Stepping on Roses has that mesmerizing magnetism common among most shojo series, I found myself consistently distracted by the unhe
... morealthy relationships between Sumi, her husband Soihchiro, and her would-be suitor Nozomu. This is probably not historically inaccurate, considering women's place way back when, but I was still slightly disturbed. When Soichiro expressed his confusion about their relationship by almost forcing himself on her, I was just confused. Despite this, and my growing exhaustion with manga plots of "Oh! What a romantic, abusive relationship! They'll fall in love~" I found myself continuing to read the books. The couple does develop itself over time, and I was began to root for Soichiro's and Sumi's growing relationship. I hoped it would overtake the emotional abuse he gave her- and I'm sure, had I read farther, I would not be disappointed. less
