review 1: Haven't read the first one, but I'm buying it--this author is fun! The book is adorable, teachable, and intelligent. So what if it's a little predictable? Would make a wonderful 5th grade school year book, or a 6th grade summer reading. You could pair it with THE EGYPT GAME. It's also accessible enough that a good 4th grade reader could do it--but they might not get the nuances of the artifacts, nor the issues about family raised in the book.
review 2: MontanaLibrary2GoThe second Theodosia Throckmorton book continues in the same vein as the first, and since I enjoyed the first I certainly enjoyed this one as well. I would reiterate that this is a good book to recommend to any budding Egyptologists out there, as a kid I was (and have always remained) obsesse
... mored with Ancient Egypt, and would have loved this series just for the opportunity to immerse myself in more of it. I noticed a couple little jokes here and there that probably existed in the first book without my seeing them, such as the author of a particular book referenced by Theodosia being "Lynn N. Bandage" or Linen Bandage. When an author does this just as a fun thing, and not because they think they're overly clever, it gives me a grin. The Staff of Osiris had a lot more going on in it than the first book in the series, and although not a lot of new characters were introduced it wavered on the verge of being too much. Especially with the Grim Nipper, I think the author was on the cusp of losing control of her creation, and I'm grateful that she didn't let it get out of hand. As an adult reader the surprise antagonist seemed quite obvious from, essentially, the beginning, but I suspect that it would be more of a surprise to readers in the age range the book is intended for. I read this in the middle of the night while unable to sleep due to pain, so I was already feeling quite fragile, which meant I didn't respond well to Miss Sharpe or to the already well-established fact that Theodosia's parents basically don't notice her at all. Miss Sharpe and her tactics made me quite seriously uncomfortable, but as I say this was due to my own momentary weakness, and is not a flaw in the book. I will absolutely go on to the next book in the series, I have already checked that the library has it. less
