review 1: This one...this one took me longer to finish. The review is sort of misleading in that it makes the Pucks' part in the story appear to be much more important than it actually is. The description of the Puck lottery no one wants to win is certainly diverting, but it is by no means the main aspect of the book. The big plot point is the "horrific reminder from Cal's own past." Now, telling you all what that is would spoil the story, so I won't. But I will say the big bag in this novel wasn't my favorite. Maybe because he's so infuriating. I really didn't care for his character, and I found myself delaying the finish of the book because I just knew something bad was going to happen. Betrayal in this novel comes from a corner I wasn't expecting it in, continuing in the great Th... moreurman tradition of surprising readers. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next.
review 2: The ever snarky Cal Leandros once again takes us along with him, his brother Niko, Robin Goodfellow, and the vampiress Promise on a journey of family woes, automatons, Puck lotteries, and underground black markets for the supernatural. And these aren't even part of the BIG plot twist that causes Cal to once again question his own humanity (no spoilers here, you will have to read the book!).One aspect of this book that particularly caught my interest was that we finally get to delve a little more deeply into Niko's backstory. His shady father appears after having been gone the entirety of Niko's life, knocking on their door asking for a big favor. The confliction Niko feels, and the pure hatred Cal expresses toward the man, makes for an interesting new look at the fair haired brother. less
