review 1: The Revolution is on,the war with Wilhelm is starving the people in Russia and they have taken to the streets, looting the stores, breaking the windows. The terrorists and murderers among them have started to assassinate members of the aristocracy and spread lies and propaganda to further incite the people against the czar and his extended Romanov family.Based on the true story of the life and death of Grand Duchess Elisavyeta Fyodorovna, born a German princess and granddaughter to Queen Victoria, older sister of the Empress Alexandra-This novel follows two converging paths-one Elisavyeta whose husband has been assassinated and who gave away all her possessions, became an abbess has tried to help the poor and wounded soldiers through her charitable work-the other a worker, R... moreevolutionary and assassin whose wife was killed by czarist troops during a demonstration-and he wants revenge.Great historically based fiction by an author who knows really the history and the Russian people. What lessons this history can teach.I was fascinated to learn that this woman was later canonized Saint Elisabeth and a statue placed in Westminster in 1998,the ceremony attended by her great-great nephew Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth II.
review 2: Two discs left and I couldn't finish it, mostly because of the dreary writing. The story of the German-born Elizabeth Feodoovitch Romanov, clearly well-researched and factual, should have been spell-binding but, instead, grated on the listener. The readers, one for Grand Duchess Elizabeth and one for her husband's assassin, were fine but the stuff they were given to read was tired, the verbage over done and trite. Not the read I'd hoped for, at all. less

A little violent for my taste. I did enjoy learning more about the Russian Revolution.

Good historical fiction book--sound research--well-written.
