review 1: From a low-voltage & unpromising opening amongst St Austell's china clay workings, & the disappearance of company records, Robert Goddard's 2012 crime novel develops into an entertaining if convoluted whodunnit, whatdunnit & whydunnit! It moves in 3 distinct time-zones (1967-9 to 1984 to 2010!) from Cornwall to Capri (& Naples) where some of the most vivid violence takes place,& the involvement of 'la Camorra' is something of a surprise. The protagonist,Jonathan Kellaway,(an LSE graduate like myself!) is a believably worldly but occasionally gullible component of the story & relates the confusions & obfuscations of the Wren family & their idiosyncracies with a measured eye. This is not a real page-turner,no; but it rattles along with erratic rhythm to an upbeat finale where a... morell the loose ends are tied-off & Kellaway finishes his odyssey with a golden fleece & a Penelope?
review 2: Like most if not all Robert Goddard novels, this one involved a mystery from the past. The setting of the book is the Cornish clay industry. We meet the protagonist originally in 2010, but he is soon forced to face events from his past and we relive episodes that happened to him when he was just beginning his working career in the 1960s. There are plenty of twists and turns, some more predictable than others. The book kept me engaged but I have to say the ending left me a bit cold as it all seemed a bit improbable to me how things were tied up at the novel's conclusion. less

Not his best and with much fewer twists and so the ending was a surprise - it was who I thought!

Usual good quality storytelling from Robert Goddard, although he has written better
Yana
Fairly slow moving, but plot driven. Interesting but not compelling.
