review 1: One thing that happens when Rick and his friends find themselves in a place where they feel save is that they have a chance to really consider all of the horror of the new world and their part in it. The herd has been slain, and the residents of the little walled community not far out of DC are working on burning the bodies while Rick is dealing with the horror of the fact that his son Carl received a gruesome gunshot wound to the head at the end of the previous book.Carl is stable, and Denise, their surgeon/doctor, is confident he will do well, but it is hard to tell with potential brain injuries, particularly since they are lacking any high-tech medical equipment. Rick is taking on a new approach because he is horrified and blames himself for possibly being so focused ... moreon protecting his family that he had hurt others since things had gone wrong. He is also worried that Carl might be trying so hard to be "strong" that he is numbing himself from feeling, which is not a good thing. One of the serious problems facing the community now is that they seem to be running low on supplies and winter is settling in. Rick knows that he needs to start sending people out to search for supplies, but he also needs to respect Maggie's concern for Glenn, so he decides to send a larger group out to thoroughly scavenge the nearby area and leave Glenn at home.Unfortunately, some of the original residents of the community are feeling that Rick and the gang are actually endangering them because things seemed safe before their arrival. This leads to a major confrontation that will really change how everyone in the community is living. To make matters even worse, Rosita has figured out that Abraham has been cheating on her, and she needs to figure out how she is going to deal with it since all three of them are trapped in the close quarters of the community.Spencer is also finding it difficult to deal with the fact that Andrea really wants to cool things down in the romance department. I have a feeling this is going to develop quite a bit in future volumes.I can't wait for the next book!
review 2: My interest in the plot and the characters has significantly stagnated over the past volumes. Where is this going? Fifteen volumes, and no real direction as to the grand scope of things. I get it, we readers are as secluded as the characters, we only know what they know, proximity engenders empathy, yadayadayada...At this point, the story is going to die with the characters, because Mr. Kirkman hasn't produced any other reason for us to keep caring after they are gone - and even caring for them is a stretch. This is a real shame, in my opinion, because the world is a big place and Kirkman's already proved that he can produce more interesting characters than Rick and the gang, whose layers have all been peeled off a long time ago. If they all locked themselves in a room and took turns putting a gun in their mouths to end things, Rick passively watching them do it until he's the last, it would be as fitting a conclusion as any one we're being led to at this stage. Maybe I need to take a break from the series and come back to it later. Maybe...just maybe...I'll regain some lost love with some distance. But I don't think I will. less

Lot of foreshadowing of ways things could go wrong as the characters try to find hope again.

Rick is becoming a right whining pussy. That's all I've got.
