review 1: Billed as a supernatural suspense story with romantic undertones, I really didn't find much of any of the three. This was a book about 100 pages too long that needed more action and suspense and less of a history lesson on Anastasia Romanov. The plot focuses on the discovery of a coffin in the Bering Sea in which a body from a Russian colony on a remote American island is feared to contain remnants of the Spanish flu. Hidden by the coffin's finder Harley Vane is a silver cross encrusted with emeralds that he stole off the potentially virulent body. Although the flu took its toll during the First World War (the flu actually killed more soldiers than those that died in battle), their is no known antidote. Frank Slater, an epidemiologist, and his team are sent to the rem... moreote island to look for more graves and determine if the flu virus is still present. Everything falls apart when the Vane brothers decide more treasure may be hidden on the island and they compromise the site. The race is on to stop the flu from spreading and to discover how the flu got to such a remote island in the first place. It took me a long time to read this because I had no investment in the characters and only a slight interest in the plot line. In the end I was satisfied with the read but wouldn't recommend it unless you like books that contain Rasputin and alternative histories about the fall of Tsarist Russia.
review 2: Such an incredible weave of stories. Intermixing over a century of ideas and history without being overly complicated or confusing. Unique and exilirating as well as being grounded in human flaws. What struck me most though was the author's ability to describe the scenery and moment so that it truly lived in my mind. I could picture Alaska, the weather, the forestry, and the vastness of the sky so perfectly...just to name one of the extraordinary settings that he took us to. less
