review 1: I read this book in 2 days while on spring break with my kids. Robert Pobi's second book is clearly a homage to the likes of Jaws and other creatures of dark waters. It was a fast read, kept my interest and was hard to put down. I appreciate the depth of research that was needed to write this story and Pobi's addition of Sheriff Pope was a great character read - I wish he would write a prequel based on Pope's psychotic deeds and blow that character out.I look forward again to reading his next book!
review 2: Read this over two days stuck in bed with mumps or manflu or something. Borrowed this on Amazon since I needed some light in-bed reading. Bingo. It was easy enough to read and the premise and basic plot is made from great stuff. Being familiar with the Ge
... morerman fairy tale the book is riffing on also helped. So why only two stars? Not because fishing is something I don't care about. **** Beware - down here be spoilers! ****1. The cliched language used to describe shallow, TV-esque characters and their actions really soured the experience from the start: millionaire horror writer grieving for his sexy dead wife (mainly: her bum - see point 2.) meets poor sick handicapped boy with heroic disposition and the boy's attractive pediatrician with athletic buns (yep) - and hires quirky Finnish handyman with humorless German wife, before later teaming up with a drunk but classy English antiques dealer...meanwhile, a tall, powerful, sadistic-psycho-pedo-druggo cop with his Stetson down low over his sunnies is on a rampage. ...the "other monster" aka the scary fish, hardly rates a proper mention. 2. The frequently primitive, disproportionately crass language, as well as overdone descriptions of male sexuality as just objectifying women like some sad Internet porn addict. Pointless and pityfully offensive, it made several male characters not just unbelievable, but unlikeable - including the "hero" writer. 3. The lack of editing to tighten / cut the various pointless plot lines / characters. In summary: excellent idea with high literary potential, but badly executed and possibly in part wilfully so; it seemed to me to have been done in part suspiciously badly on purpose, so as to pander to stereotypes suited to the kind of script that ends up produced as a block-buster creature flick. Hope I am right: that would mean the author is yet capable of greatness - plus we might be in for a weird but not entirely missable horror movie based on a frigging freshwater fish. less
