review 1: Truth be told, and this is an honest review, I liked Merlin's Blade better in the end than in the beginning.Robert Treskillard attempts a new telling of the Arthur legends and at first, they don't quite make sense. Still once you get past the "this isn't the Camelot story I remember" part, Treskillard weaves a good story full of both early British Christianity as well as the competing druidism. The book gets off to somewhat of a slow start, but is easy to read and enjoyable for the most part. Not having read other works specifically devoted to Merlin, it is difficult (or impossible) to make a comparision. I would think if one loves the Arthur legends and stories that this Treskillard's works would be something to consider and meet that need. But I was not inspired enoug... moreh to wish to continue the series.Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher through the BookSneeze®.com book review bloggers program. review 2: Merlin's Blade adds to the lore of Arthurian legend by providing a richly detailed setting and a thorough, intricate story line. It has all the elements a fantasy reader would want. Merlin's character shows promise, in what I hope to be future novels of this series. He is brave and loyal to his beliefs and morals. And while he has a physical disability, he does not allow it to hold him back from what is right. As for the story line, I felt it to be a bit slow at first. There is a lot of play-by-play character movement and dialogue, but not a whole lot of exciting, action in the beginning. However, once things started going and the stakes were raised, more thrilling action occurred. Some parts felt too easy, such as character development or certain elements fell into place perfectly. And the dialect at times was a bit confusing and hard to read through. There is a pronunciation glossary in the back, which was helpful and also interesting to read through. However, I had hoped the glossary would be more than just people and places but definitions of some terminology that escaped my own knowledge.Overall, the story and characters were wonderful to read about. I would definitely recommend to lovers of fantasy of all ages (though there is some violent and bloody content). I hope to read more about Merlin and the young King Arthur in Robert Treskillard's Merlin Spiral series!*I received this book for free from Zondervan through booksneeze.com. The view of Druidism depicted really put me off. What is so great about Christianity anyway?
