review 1: I don't know if you've ever read "Sh*t My Dad Says," but "A Far Piece to Canaan" is written by the father (Sam Halpern) who says all those outrageous & hilarious things. This book isn't a comedy, though. It's written with that same straight-shooting, intelligent, dry wit...but it's about an old man who goes back to the Kentucky area in which he spent a few of his formative years. It's two tales; the one where the man remembers his past & the one where he comes to grips with his actions as an adult. It was exciting, moving, and fantastic. If Sam Halpern ever decides to put a pen to paper again, I'll be there to read it. Definitely put it on your to-read list.
review 2: It took me a few pages to get into the book, but eventually I found it a good read. Ear
... morely in the book I felt the transaction into "hick" was not consistent, but that too seemed to get better as it went along. I had a pretty good idea who would be involved in the climax of the book, but I had the sequence of events wrong. In the end I found the book very engaging, even if the principle was hard to warm up to. less
