review 1: This is a book I really wish I had a chance to discuss with someone. With a lot of internal dialogues and philosophical musings on the nature of reality and memory, I suspect many of my book-reading friends would have found it boring, but I thought those elements were really suspenseful and fascinating. I am finding it difficult to express the fascination I had during the reading of this novel. But I do have a caveat...Trying to discuss my issues with the book without giving spoilers is difficult, but I do feel the very ending of the book (last TWO PAGES! Such a small section to bug me so much) was unsuccessful. The fact is that the whole book is filled with ambiguities, contradictions, impossibilities, that did not really bother me - in fact, I actually enjoyed that ... moreelement. However, the last two pages, starting where he is climbing the stairs, is just not realistic in a way that bothers me. My impression is that the author actually wants the reader to believe that this part of the book is true, or at least as "real" as anything else in the book, but it did not ring true for me and is leading me to start to pick at, try to unravel the rest of book. And I really enjoyed the book, so I don't want to do that....I write this just after finishing the book, so I think it will be interesting to see how my thoughts on it change over time. I have a feeling this is one I will have lingering thoughts of for a while.
review 2: I would give this 2.5 stars if I could. And if I had stopped reading this book about halfway through I probably would have given it 3 stars. The pace of book was engaging. The concept was intriguing. Some of the sexual references seemed very out of place and completely unnecessary. I did find it both interesting and a little discombobulating to have the lingo and references be about countries I am not very familiar with - but mostly it added to the intrigue and intended confusion of the book. Some things I really enjoyed about this book, but there was enough that was bizarre or inappropriate to knock this one down for me. less
