review 1: Well done historical fiction. In 1864 Emmy Blue and her parents leave their Illinois farm, family and friends behind to establish a new life in Golden CO. The story follows the events of the journey by covered wagon. River crossings, rattlesnakes, "go-backs", and disagreements among members of the wagon train are some of the challenges that the family encounters. The heartbreak and hardship faced by people who made this trip are not minimized, but are related in an appropriate voice for upper elementary readers. AR 4.8, Approx. S-T.
review 2: This book is about a journey of hope and the dream of making a better living in the west during the 19th century. Emmy Blue, the 10-year-old main character and only child has to pack up with her ma and pa and travel in a C
... moreonestoga wagon train from Quincy, Illinois to Golden, Colorado. She must leave behind some of her beloved belongings and childhood friends, but she discovers some new ones on the difficult journey. While on the trail for months, she experiences new friendships, confusion, monotony, fear, loss, and joy. This book would be good to use for history, because it gives a glimpse into the real thoughts and feelings of individuals as they took a huge leap of faith and left everything they knew to start over again. less

3 1/2 stars. Cute book, but I'm not a quilting convert. ;)
