review 1: This book follows an 11-year-old girl on her trip from Quincy, IL to Golden, CO as her father seeks out a better life for her family. When she leaves Quincy, her grandmother presents her with the pieces for a doll-sized Log Cabin quilt. Emmy does not enjoy quilting, but on her journey she learns that quilts bind the women of a community together, be it a town or a wagon train. The author was a bit heavy handed with some of her plot elements. The quilting conversations seemed a bit forced. I also wasn't keen on how the author presented the role of women in pioneer times as being subservient to the husband nor the abusive relationship in the wagon train. It seemed as though the author tried to dumb-down the concepts because the book is written for children, but I think t... morehey could have been handled with more finesse.
review 2: gr 3-6 209 pgs1864, Illinois to Colorado Territory. When 10 year old Emmy Blue's father announces that the family is moving to Colorado Territory, Emmy Blue's mother is sad to leave everything familiar behind and Emmy Blue is sad too, but also excited for the journey ahead. The story follows the family and the rest of their wagon train as they make the dangerous journey to their new home. This story seemed to emphasize the unequal relationship between men and women at the time. Emmy Blue's mother accepts her husband's decision although she is not happy about it. When one of the women in the wagon train is being beaten by her husband everyone accepts her explanations of being "clumsy". Once they reach Colorado Territory toward the end of the story, there are hints that the inequality, at least in the case of Emmy Blue's parents, may be balancing out a little.Inspired by a true story less
