review 1: Framed around Obon, the Buddhist festival of the dead, the novel is about two girls who live in the same place, the Okinawa Prefecture of Japan, but are separated in time by 70-years. Both girls lose a sister and they want to ensure that the lost sisters are united with their ancestors. The book relates experiences during the Battle of Okinawa, when more than one-third of the local population was killed or committed suicide. In addition to being a powerful tale of family, friend and love that transcends time; the story also speaks to the horrors of war and the way both Japan and America has used Okinawa for their own benefits. Although my first book by the author, I plan to read more.
review 2: Sarah Bird does not disappoint. It's hard to name an author who j
... moreust does not let you down, but Sarah is that author. This book grabbed me up and held me captive for 24 hours, during which I carried it with me everywhere, and if I even had two seconds to lean against a door-frame, I cracked the book and dove back in. Excellent storytelling, excellent characters and mysteries, ghosts, love, family, tragedy and war all come to life in this gorgeous book. Let this be your next favorite book. :) less
