review 1: At first I'm a bit annoyed in how the story opens. I feel like I'm thrown in the middle of blossoming relationship between Sheriff Grady Sullivan and ACLU Lawyer/Cheese Farmer Edward Clayton without ever knowing the beginning. However, it's only take a little while for me to discard the feeling and let myself being lullaby-ed by this beautiful story. Grady is a war veteran, who just return from his second tour in Afghanistan. He battles the people in his department who don't want him to restore order. He is longing for someone at the end of the day, to just "be" with him, more for companionship and love, rather than just physical connection. And he finds that in Edward, a kindred soul, who is aside from being a cheese farmer also saves illegal immigrant by temporarily let ... morethem stay in his farm. I love Grady and Edward's relationship. It's so subtle and romantic and lovely without ever being too sugary. I love them reading to each other (OMG, men who read!!!). I love them making cheese (gosh, that process is very detailed). I love them taking a bath together in Edward's bathtub (this is the third time I find a significant scene with bathtub in Sarah Black's story, what's with that?). It's just so comfortable. And the story is so much more!! It's amazing how Ms. Black also raises the issue of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell", depression and what happens to soldier after they return to war, and illegal immigrants (including children), without being too forceful (is that a word?!?). Truly wonderful read.
review 2: 4.5 StarsThis was a wonderful story. I always get so wrapped up in Sarah Black's characters and stories that I'm wishing for more when they end. The romance between Grady and Edward was sweet and fresh and not filled with meaningless sex. I really enjoyed this even with all the heavy issues: PTSD, suicide, "Don't Ask, Don't Tell", illegal immigration, child slavery and small town politics. Recommended! less
