review 1: The cliché goes, “don’t judge a book by it’s cover,” but it was the cover of this one that drew me in. Something about those teacups. I interpreted the photo as a symbol of women, fragile like fine china yet, in the midst of a storm, a strength beyond measure. That certainly goes along with the themes of this novel - love, loss, and friendship. The reader's guide suggests there are pivotal moments when our lives can change course forever and I believe that. As far as the cover, the author must have sensed my curiosity because she has included the tale of the five teacups on her website.
review 2: I just finished "One Moment, One Morning" this afternoon. As soon as I put it down I wrote an email to Sarah Rayner (first time I've done that!) to tell her
... morehow much I enjoyed the book. The premise of the story is how people react to these moments that come along that have the power to alter the course of one's life.In this case, that moment changes the lives of three very different women who, through the untoward death of the husband of one of them on a commute train, become inexorably entwined; in one week each of them is forever changed and forever indebted to the other two for who she becomes. It's a lovingly written book by Ms. Rayner; it seems she's put much of herself into the development of these lovely characters. Most importantly for me, when reading a book, is what I take away from the experience. I found myself pausing from time-to-time to do a little self-analysis: Am I a true friend towards my own friends? Relatives? Co-workers? I was particularly moved by Karen and how she's able to support her childrens' needs during a shatteringly difficult time in her life. Extraordinary empathy on Ms. Rayner's part. I highly recommend this for anybody who has friends and relatives who need him/her. less
