review 1: Having read 'One Moment, One Morning' and loving it I was really looking forward to reading this and having some of the same characters appear in it. The subject matter for this is two women who for different reasons cannot have children without IVF and instead use egg sharing to try for a baby. The subject of IVF is delicate and the author has dealt with this brilliantly with the array of characters in this that each have an opinion on IVF, making the book seem more real as well as more emotional. The characters of Lou, Karen and Anna all appear again and we are introduced to Cath and Rich as the other couple and they are a welcome addition to the plot and are just as likeable as the other characters. I did find the plot quite easy to work out what was going to happen I g... moreuessed a long time before it happened but I did not feel that this took any enjoyment away from it. The Two Week Wait is both funny and sad but overall is really very beautiful and is a story of how far humans will and can go to have children, and it succeeded in making me laugh and cry as I went along with the journey that the characters were embarking on. For me I do think you need to have read One Moment One Morning as you do not learn a lot about Lou's background in this as that was explored in One Moment One Morning. I also felt that I did not enjoy this book as much as One Moment One Morning but I think that is just because the first book was so spectacular, The Two Week Wait is still an excellent read.
review 2: The Two Week Wait follows the lives of the women introduced in One Moment, One Morning, along with some new characters. The primary spotlight is on Lou, who came out to her family as a lesbian in the earlier book. In this one she is confronted with a health crisis that prompts her to explore the possibility of having a baby through in vitro fertilization. The book follows her journey along with that of another couple looking at IVF treatments. The two week wait of the title refers to the waiting time before you find out if implantation resulted in pregnancy. I found the book to be really slow going. Where One Moment gave you the moment at the beginning with a bang, this book doesn't even get to the start of the two week wait until you are more than half way through. I think it might be of interest to those who could relate to fertility struggles on a personal level, but I didn't find it compelling. less
