review 2: Karen had no idea her husband would have a fatal heart attack on the London tr
... moreain that morning. Annie, her best friend and several cars back, had no idea that Karen was on the same train and that the annoying delay of the train was connected to her. Lou, sitting across the aisle from Karen and her husband and witness to the entire scene, had no idea that she would become friends with Karen and Annie. This is a story of three women brought together by a fateful event. All three women are struggling with the paths their lives will take. Karen, facing single motherhood as a widow; Annie, living with a man she loves but doesn't respect; Lou dealing with her domineering mother who has no clue about Lou's life.I loved the way Rayner brought each character to life as single individuals and then gently meshed the women together in a bond of support and friendship. What really touched my heart was the way Karen, sometimes adeptly and sometimes clumsily, tried to explain her husband's death to her 5 year old son and 3 year old daughter. The questions they asked, were raw and searching and I felt Karen's pain and frustration at trying to explain death and all its rituals to such young and impressionable little ones. From my own experience, I would say that Rayner hit that particular nail on the head. This book just touched my heart as it told the true story of friendship between women dealing with their own concerns, but able to come together to help each other. May we all be lucky enough to have those kinds of friends. less
