review 1: This is the greatest thing somebody ever wrote on a whim and put on the internet. It's amazing that this 'accidental novel' (She claims it's sort of a novel) is this good. Elliot decides to go a medieval-esque magical school where everybody is way more into fighting than learning. Elliot is a learner and wants to help make peace between the humans and the other races in their worlds (Mermaids, harpies, elves)Then there's the gender roles. Everything about this could be in a typical "girl" story but with all the genders swapped. The most obvious is with the elves. Serene-Heart-In-The-Chaos-Of-Battle is a gorgeous elf who Elliot has a crush on. In Elven culture the women are the fighters and the men are the ones who stay at home and learn embroidery. Serene and other elves o... moreften worry over the frailty of men and not wanting to 'stain their virtue' with lustful womanly acts and thats just the start of it.Then there's Luke is popular and from a well loved and very loving family, he is good at sports and fighting and Elliot hates him immediately. Serene and Luke get along great of course and so...things happenI can't summarize this whole book for you but it is so incredible. It never does what you would expect, ever...don't try to predict this book or it's sequal short story Wings in the Morning. From the humor ("And Professor Fleetwood," "Was his last name Mac?" "No, why would you ask that?"), to moments of deep heartbreak and pathos. Read it. Read it as soon as you possibly can.
review 2: I don't really write reviews on Goodreads because woo hoo no privacy settings, but heads up — if you read The Turn of the Story, please plan on also reading the follow-up short story, Wings in the Morning (and hence also supporting and purchasing or otherwise legally obtaining the short story compilation it's published in, especially considering The Turn of the Story is published on the internets for freebies!!!!). The Turn of the Story was, personally, an emotional rollercoaster in all of the greatest ways, and the conclusion presented in Wings in the Morning was necessary for me since #closure. Now u know! K bye. less

Best grumpmuffin main character ever. Reminded me of The Methods of Rationality fanfic.

This should be published - a sold, new take on the fantasy genre.
