review 1: In this second instalment of the American vampire saga we follow Skinner Sweet, Pearl and Hattie into the 1930's and the Great Depression. So much to love about this: The characters are amazing, the artwork bites and the sprawling story develops both character and the American nation. What I particularly love are the different types of vampire - There's not much here that's original original, but vampire lore is used in fresh and innovative ways and the antagonism between different types of vampire causes some great tensions. The one thing that is original is the idea that newer vamps can be killed by gold rather than silver which is a wonderful twist and of course mirrors the idea of emerging American capitalism.Great stuff. Can't wait to get on to volume... more 3 :)
review 2: The Vampire blood feud moves to Las Vegas while Pearl tries her hand at playing house...Wow! Volume one of American Vampire was already fantastic but I have to admit I was skeptical about how this could play out into a series. Doubts aside, American Vampire volume two blows the first one completely out of the water! In the first story a Las Vegas cop who goes by the name Cash (who just happens to dress like a classic p.i. and wears an Indiana Jones style hat!)investigates a series of murders connected to the construction of the Hoover Dam. His investigation just so happens to lead him to Jim Smoke (none other than Skinner Sweet) the man who was the number one suspect in the case of Cash's fathers murder. With the help of two federal agents who turn out to be glorified vampire hunters (although one of them is much more than that) Cash is quickly dragged into an ancient vampire feud taking place smack dab in Sin City. Cash's story was a ton of fun! It had more mystery than we've seen in American Vampire so far as well as a lot of twists and turns. This noir style mystery gives off a very "Ed Brubaker" feel, classic noir detective story with a supernatural twist. This plot also adds to Snyder's constantly expanding vampire world as we see even more species and variations of vampires! Cash's story also tugs on your heartstrings quite a bit. The parts with Cash's warring opinions on "who he thought his father was, and who he really was" really got to me a bit, as well as his extremely tragic situation in the end. Pearl's story was quite a bit slower than her first run in volume one but I was just so damn glad that Snyder brought her back! Pearl and Henry have been living their life mostly happy since volume one, laying low and avoiding the monsters and vampire hunters who would see them dead. I have to admit the romance between Pearl and Henry works pretty nicely, I really feel like they love each other (who says romance doesn't belong in vampire fiction?!?! pfff! damn Twilight!) They're both having issues with this relationship and I really sympathize with Pearls fears for Henry's happiness. It's very sad to be watching Henry get older and older knowing Pearl never will. Romance aside it was fun as hell to watch Pearl kick some ass again near the end! Not to mention seeing that one of Pearls old enemies is still alive and hellbent on revenge! Am I geeking out a little? Maybe a little...As before the art is fantastic! brilliant colors, dark textures. It's all very noir and yet unique to American Vampire. I still have to say I love the way the vampires are drawn. Even beautiful Pearl is a terrifying monster when she transforms! As it should be! vampire aren't supposed to be beautiful in my opinion! All in all a fantastic read! This is another series to stick with, I'm glad to see it wasn't a one hit wonder. I'm really starting to like these characters. It's clear Skinner Sweet is here for the long haul but what I'd really like is to see Cash and Pearl stick around! This is a easy 4.5 out of 5 for me! I can't wait for more American Vampire! less

Näyttävää, värikästä piirrosjälkeä, mutta ne vampyyrit... ei vaan ole minun juttuni.
