review 1: (4.5) Was really surprised by how much I enjoyed this one. I liked the first one enough but I was worried after reading the end that it would just be Batman fighting a bunch of owls throughout the whole book. That's definitely the first half but there's so much more, including a major bombshell of the Wayne legacy. And the background stuff on Gotham was a lot of fun. I've always liked Batman tales that use Gotham as a character. I was hoping that's what I would be getting out of the Gotham TV series but..well...
review 2: Batman Volume 2: The City of Owls wraps up the story Snyder began in volume 1, in a mostly satisfying way.I give issues 8-13 a 4/5, I haven't read Night of the Owls, but I don't really feel I need to, the portions with James Tynion gave plent
... morey of impact to what was happening. Lincoln March unfortunately fell into the trap of The-new-batman-character-who-is-obviously-the-antagonist, even having the same fake out death as Thomas Elliott in Hush. He was a fine villain besides that though, and his final battle with Bruce is a good one.I'm glad Snyder knows he's writing a comic and not trying to make Batman too "gritty and realistic", the story is a dark as it should be but Batman's animatronic T-Rex and his fight with a self-made superhuman zombie remind you of the great parts of comic books you can't get anywhere else. The issue at the end introducing Harper is fun, and I look forward to seeing her in the rest of the series. And so the book would stay at a 4/5 if not for the annual in it as well. Why is it in here? And if you're reading from the hardcover like me, why is it in the middle of the book? The story itself is fine, but in a book that already goes on for a while after the climax, I don't need more different art in a disconnected story. I would rate the annual a 4/5 on its own though, and is definitely worth reading, its placement here is just very odd.Because Mr. Freeze decided to hijack the book, I give The City of Owls a 3/5. less

The first two issues in this collection are awesome -- more of the smart, cutting-edge action continued from the first volume. But then Mr. Freeze shows up in a 'meh' stand-alone storyline and this volume doesn't get its footing back. It feels like the publishers pushed pretty hard to get a few too many stand-alone, tangential story lines in the mix and it feels half-hearted and lame in comparison to the first 10 issues. The Court of the Owls is really giving the Batman mythos a great jolt and when the issues are focused solely on them, we're getting Batman stories that are up there with classic arcs like Year One, Killing Joke and so on. I'll definitely be reading Volume #3 but I'm hoping there's a return to the focused, page-turning story-telling that made Volume #1 so amazing.
