review 1: The first part of this taut science fiction thriller by Scott Snyder (with haunting illustrations by Sean Murphy) is everything you could want from a genre comic: horror, suspense, intrigue, secret underwater oil rigs, monstrous mermen... everything. Sean Murphy's artwork here is really stand out. I found myself compelled to push this book on as many readers as I could right after finishing, even the non-comic reading ones.
review 2: I was really impressed by the first issue in "The Wake". I was interested to read it after hearing pretty good things about Scott Snyder's writing in "Superman Unchained" and also after listening to him talk about his work on one of Kevin Smith's podcasts. This introduction to the series really captured my attention and intrigued m
... moree. I am left wondering about the mysterious scene set 200 years in the future that appears at the beginning of the issue. The cliffhanger at the end also left me itching to get my hands on issue #2. I am optimistic that things are just going to keep getting crazier and more interesting as the series progresses, and I am excited for that. I have heard that this series is classed as horror, which I normally tend to steer clear of, as I am a bit of a scaredy cat when it comes to that genre. Therefore I am a little tentative of reading on... but after enjoying this first issue I am pretty well hooked, so I don't know if I will be able to help myself! less
