review 1: This book is about a mother who tries to accomplish "something" great for God while she is trying to raise three children. (I love the cover picture of her daughter tugging at her cape:) I thought it was an enjoyable book. At the beginning of each chapter Becky daydreams of doing something super...that part got old after a while so I just skimmed over it. It is always fun to read about a different view of motherhood. Fun, light read.
review 2: Sharon Hinck's debut novel, The Secret Life of Becky Miller, is a witty, poignant, laugh-out loud look at a mom who wants to accomplish great things for God while successfully juggling each challenge life throws her way. Becky does it all - she's a supportive wife to her beloved husband Kevin, mother to three rambunct
... moreious children, and practically a full-time church volunteer. She strives to be everything to everyone, but can she keep it all under control? Becky may not hold it all together perfectly, but she tries, wanting to actualize the "ideal" home life she always felt she lacked. When a series of trials hits the Miller household hard, including Kevin losing his job and Becky losing her her dream of a full-time women's ministry position at their church, Becky is left reeling. Her volunteer work had been the creative outlet through which she strove to do something big for God, to make her life matter and count for something. Becky can't even begin to manage the new challenges facing her family. Will she learn to see God's hand at work in her day to day life? Sharon Hinck has created a wonderfully likable heroine with an extremely active imagination. Much like James Thurber's classic character Walter Mitty, Becky Miller develops a rich fantasy life to help cope with the pressures of day to day living. In her dreams she's not "just a mom" - she's a secret agent, a pirate, a World War II spy, and an astronaut...just to name a few of her many guises. Becky's daydreams are one of the (many) highlights of the novel, and it's fun to see how her dream sequences develop in relation to the challenges she faces throughout the book. To be frank, I wasn't sure how I would relate to "mom-lit," seeing as I'm single with no kids. The Secret Life of Becky Miller was an incredibly fun surprise. What I liked most about the character of Becky was the fact that no matter what your situation is in life, Sharon Hinck has drawn her in such a way that you can relate to some aspect of her personality and faith struggles. Hinck has created a delightful "everywoman" through whose struggles she shows how God gives each and every believer's life a unique meaning and mission (make that "secret mission") all their own. less
