review 1: One important warning: you MUST read Balance of Trade first, or much of this book won't make a lick of sense. As it is, much of the book is a slow convergence of several plot lines, but finally leading to a worthy payoff. Of course, it leaves several long-term plot threads dangling, just to torment the fans.Jethri is finally adapting to his new role as a non-Liaden trader on a Liaden ship, with all of the things this requires learning. It's not just language and terminology, it's entirely different cultural concepts and viewpoints. During this process he slowly learns just how badly his "family" had misguided and under-educated him, in many ways. Then, there's the mysterious legacy from his father, and a few revelations about his real family, just enough to tantalize. This wo... moreuld be a terrible jumping-on point for readers new to the Liaden universe, but is a worthy continuation of this branch of the stories.
review 2: Enjoyed this book although the first part was a little difficult to get into. I think some of this was due to them trying to explain what it was that Jethri was studying and why. Definitely enjoyable to visit with Jethri and his family again and I felt this wrapped up some outstanding items from the first book. There are still a few more questions they could answer though (hint hint). As someone else commented this is definitely not a good book to start on as your first intro to the Liaden universe but if you have already been reading and enjoying books in this universe, Balance of Trade and this book are a nice exploration of an earlier time in the history.Possible spoilers:I will warn you there is no one from Korval or from the Department of Interior in the book, however you do get more information about Uncle and his mysterious technology. You also get to find out more of the trade history from the point of view of the Terran ships. less
