review 1: For me, this novel comes immediately before the first Lee & Miller story I read, Breath's Duty. It actually fits neatly within the series of the original space opera. I did find it interesting reading this book knowing what has happened significantly later in the timeline and wondered how it would have differed if I'd read these in chronological order. Still, I found it another great read that did not suffer at all from having a good idea where this story would end.
review 2: I thought I was reading these books in order but this one flips me backward to give the story of Theo Waitley's father. However, I think it was well-read in that order. It was more a romance in a science fiction setting than the others so far. There was lots of dramatic tension because I... more knew the final outcome of the story in loose terms, given the history that had been handed down in the Liaden world and spilled over to the planets that Theo loved on. I kept expecting the the climax in every event and it kept me anxious the last third of the book. less
