review 1: While I enjoyed the basic story, I found there was too much political talk. It served no purpose in this story that I could see. I found myself skipping the political stuff to get back to the real story. It took me out of the story every time it came up. I did enjoy the love story, and the H/h were good together. Stuart was not one of my favorite heroes. Normally I enjoy Sherry Thomas's books much more than this one. There we actually points in the book where I did not even like the hero, but I was able to move past that. The heroine was also a little more free with her favors than I usually like. Maybe it was just the late victorian setting that threw me off, as I usually prefer regency story lines.
review 2: Worth a read. The writing is dense but not tedious
... moreand the story compelling if a tad confusing in the sense that much [maybe too much]depends on the reader's willful suspension of wanting to know what is going on. Then too, all is wrapped with starling speed at the end. Of course if you are a foodie or even think you are you may be further startled by her considering beurre noisette to be [as it is literally] hazelnut butter which it is not actually and so find yourself on the alert for other food related mistakes but then all in all food and cooking are a grace note not a theme. The theme is love, like truth, will out. Come what may. less
