review 1: I have read a few books Sherryl Woods and I remember enjoying them. But this was horrible.I could not even finish it.The novel is based on a romance between Emily and Boone. Emily has returned to Sand Castle Bay after ten years, when she had turned her back on a relationship with Boone. Now that she has returned and they decide to try again, things don't seem easy. The problem with this plot is the unbelievable problems that the two main characters seem to find; simple issues that could be addressed are portrayed as insurmountable.More importantly the plot has very little going for it outside of them wanting to be together but can't. The whole point of reading romance novels is to see the couple overcome obstacles and find each other. When the obstacles are the characters t... morehemselves, after a while it is just wading through page after page of frustration.
review 2: Taking a break from my regular genres of young adult and juvenile fiction, I picked up a "grown up" book. First book I ever read by this author, and I knew going into this novel it was a beach read. Actually, Wood's style reminded me of Nora Roberts, only cleaner. I enjoyed the story first is the first of a trilogy about three sisters. Sex is implied, but there are no details, and I don't recall any curse words. Not sure if all of her books are this clean, but FYI for those interested. The story sets up with three sisters returning to North Carolina to help their grandmother, Cora Jane, fix up the family restaurant after a hurricane did significant damage. Emily, the youngest, is reunited with Boone, the man she loved and left ten years ago. Boone married another woman and had a son. His wife passed away from an "infection" that is never elaborated on. The story focuses around Emily and Boone trying to rekindle their relationship.Honestly, I was not a fan of Boone. Yes, Emily left to pursue her career as an interior designer. Just the way the Boone repeatedly threw out the "she ran away once" every chance he got, well, that got on my nerves. He acted liked it was yesterday, not a decade ago, and he did find love after Emily. Boone's son, B.J., took to Emily very fast. As a step-parent myself, I had a little trouble buying that one. But it was a nice thought and can happen, but I think a little more development needed to take place.Boone's former in-laws are in the story a little but, mostly with the mother-in-law, Jodie making a nuisance out of her self. She blamed Emily for leaving and accused Boone of not loving her daughter and repeatedly threatened to sue for custody. This whole scenario had me laughing, simply because there is no way that would happen, but I believe the author was trying to paint Jodie as a troubled woman. B.J. was well loved and provided for. Jodie was a bitter woman that needed to find a hobby and learn to be a grandmother instead of putting her grandson in the middle of her temper tantrums. Also, this really was never wrapped up, so I am assuming there will be more from her in the series.Overall,I enjoyed the book. It was a quick read. I will read the others in the series. less
