review 1: I really enjoyed The Child Who even though the subject matter is grim and not nice to think about, I thought it was still a very good book. I do however agree with some other reviewers that it feels a little fragmented and does not always flow nicely which is why I only gave it 4 stars and not the 5 stars that it should have got. I also feel that towards the end when it started to get really interesting it just ended and I would have liked it to have more in it to explain the aftermath and the consequences. The characters created are all realistic people and I found myself living their emotions with them as I read it. The book has some bits interspersed between the chapters that give clues to what the outcome is which I found only succeeded in gripping me further. This boo... morek is a fantastic thriller read but overall is quite sad about the very lows of human nature.
review 2: I really liked this book. Mainly because its subject matter is fascinating to me: a child murdered by a child, diminished responsibility, the question of who all should share the blame, the psychology of it all. That's intriguing and intense stuff, and I think Lelic handled it pretty well. I did not care much for the protagonist Leo--especially when he was interacting with his wife. For that matter, I didn't like her much either. Their communication (or lack thereof) was bewildering to me. And even though I'm fairly liberal and consider myself a compassionate person, it did seem that Leo was a little soft on this young killer while neglecting his own daughter. But in spite of these character weaknesses, it was a captivating read. less
