review 1: Took me a little while to get into this one, but it's a really well-told story. The protagonist, a young man living in Ireland in the early 1980s, faces a lot of questions about identity, patriotism, principles, history, loyalty, faith, and family... and finds no easy answers. What is worth fighting for? What is the best way to do that fighting? What is the history-- and the future-- of Ireland and its people? And how can any of us find peace and hope in the midst of strife and struggle?
review 2: It's a real shame that we lost Siobhan Dowd so young. Her writing has a real way of drawing you in with realistic and loveable characters and wonderful prose. The haunting backdrop and subject matter really keep you on the edge of your seat until the satisfying conclu... moresion.I only wish I hadn't left it so long to read it. I will be making sure I devour the rest of Dowd's backlist, although it will be sad to reach the end of such a fine writer's work. less
