review 1: First things first, I love mindless chase films. You know the ones where it is just scene after scene of people being chased by the baddies? This book is the fantasy-based written version of one of those and I loved it.The plot centres around a street girl named Danika as she joins a group of five people fleeing for the mythical Magnetic Valley, an idyllic place far from the terrors of the kingdom they live in. Four-fifths of the book is the group being pursued and then, when in the last fifth they decide to do something about it, they just end up being pursued again. Love it.
review 2: I had a great time with this book over my Christmas holidays; a creative and fun read especially for teenagers. The characters seem well rounded for a book with a group of chara
... morecters travelling together, often in these kinds of stories they can fall into simple archetypes, but I think the author does a good job of breaking them down. It's set in a unique fantasy world, where alchemy bombs drop unexpected destruction on cities and the Magnetic Valley is the only safe place to hide. I'd recommend it for fans of Hayao Miyazaki's Nausicaa of the Valley of the Winds manga, as it has similar themes of war damaging the environment. less
