review 1: A superbly written account of Estonia, before during and after WWII. Estonia, a tiny country, constantly occupied. First the Soviets. Then Hitler and the Germans. Then again the Communists. All the while, trying to be true to itself. But how many could wear all those hats and survive?This is the story of Edgar and Roland, two cousins caught up in the turmoil and trying to stay alive. Edgar sides with Hitler and the SS and rises to prominence in a prison whose floors run with the blood of interrogations. Roland, the sometime narrator, tries to remain anonymous and undetected.This is the atmosphere of knocks in the middle of the night and people dragged away, never to return. This is the anxiety of wondering whom to bribe or whom to trust. People living day-to-... moreday, waking every morning thankful just to be alive and in their own homes. This is the era of family members betraying each other to save their own skins. This novel is a difficult read, but clearly sets out the horrors that define a godless state. It gives those of us who live in freedom a reason to pause and give thanks.
