review 1: Getting into this book was hard at first because the narrative is a little disjointed between a random assortment of flashbacks. Once I was used to the irregular flow I did enjoy the story that unfolded. Cass is a seriously flawed person in a seriously flawed world. You can't help but learn to like her despite her flaws and hope that she does get reunited with Ruthie. I like that despite being a trilogy you could happily just end here without an omg cliffhanger ending. I do plan to read what happens next though because I want to see where Cass and Smoke end up.
review 2: The characters in this book are just not developed sufficiently enough for me to really care. I think I know every scar on Cass' back intimately, and some other body parts have been described
... moremore explicitly than I prefer. However, I don't know HER, I don't know SMOKE. I wanted to know Monica, but... I don't know them well enough to want to read a sequel. Perhaps, if I were a mother, I would at least understand her absolute focus on finding her daughter. less
