review 1: Fourteen-year-old Gabby tells her tale with a very convincing teen voice in S.R. Johannes’ novel On the Bright Side. The puns and humor are perfectly measured, the childish despair that she’s never been kissed is entirely believable, and Gabby’s foolish ventures, thoughtless vengeance and innocent regret are all beautifully portrayed. Oh, and did I mention, “Gabriella Williams, age fourteen. Died while texting.”The author sets the scene in this afterlife with gentle touches from many religious backgrounds. But she creates her own unique version of “haven” with delightful humor and pun-filled technology. Brights in training, or BITS, have much to learn before receiving their wings, as poor Gabby soon discovers when assigned to protect her nemesis, Angela. Amon... moregst other lessons there’s obedience, empathy, putting others’ needs before your own, and not forgetting to close the door (or the bad guys might get in…).This isn’t heaven as any of us might have learned it, but then, it isn’t heaven. It’s fiction with heart-warming common sense, delightful humor, modern-day relevance, and entirely believable characters… plus plenty of fun. I’m certainly looking forward to reading more of the series.Disclosure: I received a free ecopy of this novel from the author in exchange for an honest review.
review 2: This is a type of book that makes me laugh and cry. A teenage girl getting into all kinds of trouble but also learning things about life. What I loved most about this book is the plot and growth of the character. I love reading a book where the reader see the characters struggling with change but also learns something entirely new. Cause that is what life is about. Learning and growing. The plot of the book is a typical plot though it fills the reader with great joy. I adored seeing Gabby run into trouble, find a way to get out of trouble, etc. I laughed many times at the chaos this little girl made. I can tell she is going to bring a great change to whatever she is meant to do.There wasn't really a real love interest going on. I enjoyed watching Gabby learn more about her friends. Some things she didn't understand, in the end Gabby learned to see thing through their eyes, bringing more contentment in her life. I could do nothing in the end but smile. On The Bright Side is a modest charming book that you can resist to read. Every part of the book is plays an important role to the next part. Living the afterlife never felt so sweet. less

Man, that book was addicting! I loved it and I think it's too bad that it was so short. :(
